Well, this is a highly unflattering photo that I didn't take. But it'll have to do!

On my last day in Delhi, we spent some time doing computery stuff and semi packing, then went to a nearby movie theatre that was still showing Slumdog Millionaire - it was quite good. Of course because of all the security we had to go through metal detectors twice (once to get into the mall, once into the movie theatre at the top) and get patted down once (to get into the movie theatre). Talk about excessive.

Anyway, afterwards we went out to the market and bought stuff to make palak paneer - spinach, fenugreek, masala, garlic (they don't use it in the household), paneer. It could've been cooked down a little more so it was thicker, but overall it was great to get in the kitchen again, and satisfying!

Vig's aunts do have a washing machine, but because there was a power outage it couldn't complete the cycle! So it was time to wring it all out by hand (at least the rinse was done).

Of course as soon as they were all wrung out the power came back.

Not sure if I mentioned this elsewhere, but there wasn't running water all the time - just in the mornings from 6-9 and then again after 6pm until...I dunno, sometime in the night? There's a big tank on the roof, and another tank inside the apartment (in the bathroom) and buckets of water everywhere. We never wanted for water, but it's just a matter of collecting enough to be used (for things like baths and cooking and washing up). Multiple taps in the bathroom to be used depending on what time of day it was!

Ingredients:
1 1/2 cups brown bismati rice
1/4 tsp fenugreek seeds
1/2 tsp onion seeds
1 tbsp nut oil
1 tsp chilli powder
1/2 tsp turmeric
2 cloves garlic
350g quorn chicken pieces
2 tsp cumin seeds
1 tsp coriander seeds
100g creamed coconut
1 medium aubergine
1/2 cauliflower
2 tbsp desiccated coconut
2 tbsp flaked almonds
fresh coriander

Method
Place the rice with three cups or water in a covered pot and bring to the boil. Drop the temperature to allow if to simmer. Whilst you are making the curry, keep an eye on the pot. When the water has vanished and the rice looks pitted like the surface of the moon, remove from heat and allow to steam until you are finished making the curry.

Heat the oil in a deep frying pan. Add the fenugreek and onion seeds for a few minutes. Lower the heat and add the turmeric and chilli powder (i'm no fan of incendiary curry, so this is fairly weak). Crush the garlic directly into the pan. Stir the spice and oil mixture thoroughly, before adding Quorn pieces whilst continuing to stir. The Quorn pieces should be fully coated in the mixture.

Next, dissolve the creamed coconut in about 200ml of boiling water and then grind the cumin and coriander seeds in a mortar and pestle. Be sure not to let the curry dry out, or stick to the pan whilst you do this.

Dice the aubergine into pieces of around 1cm square and break the cauliflower into small florets. Add them to the pan along with the ground seeds and desiccated coconut. Give it all a good stir then pour over the dissolved coconut. Cover and then leave to simmer for about 5-10 minutes.

Place the flaked almonds in a dry pan and heat until they start to brown.

Once the curry is cooked, serve on a bed of bismati rice with the toasted almonds and fresh coriander as garnish

spent the rainy sunday afternoon cooking a storm in the kitchen with sis.

Recipe (adapted from Singapore Hawker Food cookbook)

Ingredients

- 1 kg thick bee-hoon, aka thick rice vermicelli
- 300 g bean sprouts
- 6 pieces fish cake (cut into strips)
- 2 pieces cucumber (cut into strips)
- 60 g laksa leaves (chopped), aka vietnamese mint or daun kesom
- 30 medium prawns ( cooked in water)

Stock:

(A)
- 400 g chopped shallots
- 60 g chopped garlic
- 60 g chopped galangal, aka blue ginger
- 60 g chopped fresh turmeric, aka yellow ginger
- 40 g belacan
- 8 red chillies
- 8 candlenuts
- 3 tbsps chilli paste

(B)
- 200 g chopped dried shrimps
- 2 stalks lemongrass (crush with the flat of a knife)
- 300 g laksa leaves

(C)
- 3 litres water
- 1 tbsp salt
- 3 tbsp suger

(D)
- 1 litre coconut milk

Method:

1. Grind (A) ingredients well.
2. Heat 8 tbsps of oil. Stir fry (A) ingredients until fragrant. Add (B) ingredients. Stir fry until fragrant. Add (C) ingredients and bring to a boil. Add coconut milk and stir until the mixture boils. This is the laksa stock.
3. Cook the bee-hoon and bean sprouts in water until done. Put them into a bowl. Top with fish cake, cucumber and prawns. Pour the stock from step (2) over. Sprinkle chopped laksa leaves on top. Serve.

Understanding Rebecca Webb starts with the answer to a simple question:


Rebecca Webb, founding film curator of UCSD's ArtPower!, looks to bring an interactive film experience to San Diego; here, she sits in the new film and performance venue, "The Loft."
“What is a film curator? That's a good question,” said Webb, the founding film curator for UCSD's presenting organization ArtPower! “A lot of people – when I'm here, anyway – say, 'Oh, do you work in a library or something?' ”

For most film curators, that something could be a museum. But that would be a role of a more inside-the-box film curator – a box that Webb has every intention of breaking out of. She's the brand new curator of a brand new program, and plans on using her creative reign to the fullest.

“As a film curator here, I get to design a program,” Webb said, seated on a couch on the second floor of the new Price Center East expansion. “It's not only film. It's really film experience. I'm designing interactive film experiences for the community here and the community at large.”


Webb, 41, came to UCSD by way of Harvard University, where she worked for five years, her activities ranging from serving as the managing editor of a political science journal to exhibiting her photography. She moved to San Diego a year ago this month – thanks largely to a professor she met at Harvard.

“He was teaching (at Harvard), but he's actually tenured here at UCSD,” Webb said. “I moved here because of him. We're getting married – he's my fiance.”

The “he” is UCSD political scientist Lawrence Broz. The couple was in a long-distance relationship for two years before Webb and her 7-year-old son, Jack Henry, moved to San Diego.

The transition from Harvard to UCSD hasn't been perfect for her, but it's been close.

“The only thing I don't like is having to drive everywhere,” Webb joked. “I used to ride my bike all the time.”

Webb studied painting and printmaking at Tufts University/The Museum School just outside Boston. After brief stints displaying her paintings in Haiti and Miami, she made her way to New York City. She lived there for 11 years, working on such well-known films such as “Pi” and other documentaries.

With experience in all walks of art – she's been a film editor and producer, a post-production supervisor and a new media producer – Webb officially made the transition to her post as ArtPower!'s film curator in January.

Webb calls the premise of her program a desire to create an interactive experience for her viewers.
“I'm really focusing on how the audience engages with the process itself,” she said. “We're having a program called 'Night at the Foovies,' where I'm going to be showing a film called 'The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover.' And we're going to be eating the food that's in the film. So, really, it's the full experience.”

The “Night at the Foovies” program will take place Feb. 20 in the new – and not quite finished – Loft. The Loft, Webb said, will be a lower-key, causal kind of an environment where people can have a drink and get something to eat as they watch a film (or see a performance).

Webb has a variety of themes she plans on focusing on, ranging from how cinema and architecture relate to each other to a furthering development of the student film festival – she hosted the university's first one in May.

Her “Iraq Inside Out” series, which will debut Jan. 22, will offer a look at the Iraq War through differing lenses.

“I'm bringing director Deborah Scranton out for 'Bad Voodoo War,' ” Webb said. “In her work ... the soldiers there in Iraq film their experiences, and then she takes their footage and incorporates it into her film here.

“Then, I'll be showing a film by an Iraqi documentarian, and an Iranian feature film director. So, we get to look at the different contrast.”

Starting Oct. 5, Webb's “The Press Rewind” series will present student films made by such well-known filmmakers as Robert Zemeckis and George Lucas.

“We want to show the students where they came from, to give them hope,” she added.

That's her focus. With all of her experiences, Webb says the thing that excites her most is getting to bring the work of her students to life.

“As an artist myself, I know the struggles that you encounter,” she said. “To give students an opportunity to show their work, and to help them with their careers – I just think that's really exciting.

“I've worked in galleries before and shown my own work, so I felt looking forward that this was a culmination of my film passion and desire to help other artists.”
